Wilburton to celebrate National GEAR UP Week


WILBURTON, OK (Sept. 19, 2013) – Wilburton Mayor Stephen Brinlee recently signed a proclamation recognizing Sept. 23-27 as National GEAR UP Week in the community.

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federal initiative to increase the number of low-income students who enter and successfully transition into postsecondary education. Eastern Oklahoma State College will receive more than $12.6 million during a seven-year period to help students and educators in 30 partner schools.

Eastern’s GEAR UP for Success program will celebrate National GEAR UP Week with one of the nation’s leading motivational speakers on Sept. 23 in Wilburton. Aric Bostick will present “HERO on Duty! What you do speaks louder than what you say!” to more than 2,400 area eighth and ninth graders from the 30 GEAR UP partner schools.
