Hartshorne ninth grade GEAR UP students tour East Central University

WILBURTON (Oct. 21, 2014) - Hartshorne ninth grade GEAR UP students recently traveled to Ada to tour East Central University. The trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State GEAR UP.

The tour began in the Bill S. Cole University Center. Students saw the recreation areas, fitness center and student gymnasium. Students then moved around campus and walked through the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center where they walked on the theatre stage and saw the new facilities. Next, students went through the Chickasaw Business & Conference Center which houses business classes as well as a “mock” court room for students studying law.

To conclude the tour, students were presented with “Weird Scholarships” by BJ Ecker. Ecker is a graduate of ECU and works in the recruiting office. He shared his experience of funding his entire college career through random scholarships he found online. Ecker is not an athlete, and he was considered an “average” student in high school. His story provided an eye opening experience to students about scholarship opportunities and where to find them.

“It was a great tour,” said GEAR UP Education Coordinator Rachael Ranallo. “GEAR UP sponsors two field trips each year—one to visit a college or university and one educational or cultural trip. Students love to visit college campuses. It provides a great opportunity for them to see themselves as college students.”
