EOSC Nursing Advisory Board gets updates regarding success of program in Idabel

IDABEL, OK (Feb. 22, 2019) – Eastern Oklahoma State College (EOSC) recently hosted its annual Nursing Advisory Board meeting on Feb. 21 at the Southeastern Oklahoma State University McCurtain County Campus (SEMCC) in Idabel. Numerous representatives attended the meeting, including McCurtain Memorial Hospital, May’s Hospice, Kiamichi Technology Center, Paris Regional Hospital, and various representatives from SEMCC.

EOSC Nursing Director Gina Bullock reported that a recent survey of 2018 graduates showed a job placement rate of 94 percent. Of those graduates, 88 percent reported an average starting salary above $40,000 a year. Bullock also reported that the Idabel nursing program’s completion rate increased for the third consecutive year from 70 percent in 2016 to 93 percent in 2018. Student evaluation comments regarding their clinical sites were positive concerning the McCurtain Memorial Hospital, with many expressing that they enjoyed their experiences there and appreciated the helpful staff and inclusive environment.

EOSC has offered the Registered Nursing (R.N.) program at the Idabel campus since the early 1990s. Student can choose from two tracks to earn a degree. The traditional, basic licensure program accepts applications for the freshman nursing class every February to begin the nursing program the following fall term. These students typically have already taken pre-requisite courses necessary to being the program. A transition program is also available for students who are already licensed practical nurses (LPN) or paramedics. Applications for the transition program are accepted each October with courses beginning in January of each year. Students can earn LPN and paramedic licenses from programs such as those offered at the Kiamichi Technology Center.

SEMCC will host a College Night on March 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for all prospective students. Those interested in learning more about the programs offered at the Idabel campus, including nursing, are welcome to attend the event. A scholarship drawing will be held for students who attend.
