Eastern to honor veterans and active service members with special program Nov. 11
WILBURTON, Okla. – Eastern Oklahoma State College will host its annual Veterans Day Observance Monday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 P.M. in the E.E. Tourtellotte Student Center Ballroom. The event is open to the public and all area veterans and active service members are invited to attend.
The president of the Eastern Student Government Association, sophomore Brianna Stockton, of Wilburton, will open the ceremony by welcoming and leading those present in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sophomore Jana Cox, of Wilburton, will present the National Anthem.
The program will feature two guest speakers. The first will be Senior Chief Petty Officer Randy Sims. Sims served four tours of duty, including Kuwait Liberation, Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom and two tours in the Global War on Terrorism. His highly decorated military career includes 30 awards. In 2008, after 31 years of service, Sims retired from the United States Navy. He also served as a supervisory officer and training specialist for the Department of Homeland Security from 2002 through 2015. Sims served his country with 42 years of military and government service combined.
Zachary Butler will be second guest speaker. Butler served for 14 years in the Army and Army National Guard as an army medic. Butler is a student in Eastern’s respiratory therapy program.
Eastern’s Music Department will perform a number of patriotic songs including “America the Beautiful” and “My Country Tis of Thee.” Free refreshments will also be provided at the conclusion of the program.
