Eastern to dedicate renovated theatre after national championship debate coach Johnnie Wray

WILBURTON, OK (December 29, 2012) – Eastern Oklahoma State College will dedicate a renovated theatre after a dynamic, dedicated teacher who brought national attention to the college’s speech and debate program in the 1960s.

The Johnnie Wray Theatre will be dedicated on Friday, Jan. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in Pratt Hall in Wilburton. The Dedication will include a special inaugural performance by the EOSC Theatre and Music Departments. The event is open to the public.

Johnnie Wray served as a speech and debate instructor at Eastern from 1959 to 1984. During that time, her students won numerous national debate championships and individual awards. Eastern administrators wanted to recognize Wray’s legacy and her efforts to inspire young students to pursue the arts.

The Little Theatre was originally opened in Pratt Hall in 1963. The recent renovations include new seating, stage lightening, sound and audiovisual systems, as well as updates to the lobby, band and choral rehearsal halls and practice studios. Students will use the renovated space for music, theatre, recitals, lectures and more.
