Antlers seventh grade GEAR UP students tour Carl Albert State College

WILBURTON, OK (May 13, 2019) – Seventh grade students from Antlers recently toured CASC (Carl Albert State College) in Poteau. Students were greeted by Michael Walker, Viking Ambassador and a sophomore majoring in Allied Health, and Toby Huff, Viking Ambassador and a sophomore majoring in General Studies.

The tour began in Hemphill Hall, the administrative building for CASC. Many offices of the institution are found in Hemphill Hall including Admissions and Financial Aid. Students were informed this would be an important building during their time at CASC, and they would spend quite a lot of time in the building.

Next, students walked across campus and saw the Joe E. White Library, Johnson Hall, and a CASC dorm room. Antlers students ended their tour at the Costner-Balentine Student Center where students had time to ask questions about their visit. After the question and answer session, students enjoyed some free time in the student lounge.

"I always enjoy the tours we have at Carl Albert State College and look forward to returning," said LaDonna Baldwin, GEAR UP Education Coordinator.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural/educational in nature. In 2017, Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant that serves over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.

Carl Albert State College Viking Ambassadors Toby Huff and Michael Walker speak to students about campus life.

Antlers seventh grade boys, Jacob King, Trevor Ludlow, Cameron Snow, and Jakus Hatcher, tour a dorm room at CASC.
