Eighteen southeastern Oklahoma junior high and high school students participated in a nursing camp sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College Department of Nursing recently.
The Wilburton college partnered with the Area Health Education Council (AHEC), and the Southeast Oklahoma Nursing Project Partners such as the Choctaw Nation and area hospitals.
Throughout the four day camp, the students were introduced to the fundamentals of nursing with hands on skills. Using a variety of training equipment in the interactive skills lab, students learned the proper technique for inserting intravenous catheters, wound care, checking blood pressures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The students toured health facilities in the region visiting the units and interacting with the staff concerning roles as health care providers.
Eastern was awarded a grant from the Department of Labor to expand the nursing program and increase enrollment. This is the third year the camps were held to spark an interest in nursing for area high school students.
Eastern’s School of Nursing has been a key provider for Registered Nurses for the southeastern part of Oklahoma. The program offers classes via ITV to McAlester and Idabel. The Idabel and Wilburton campuses offer the full two year program. The Idabel program was expanded in 2007 for the full two year program. Eastern also provides a LPN to RN program for completion in three semesters. If interested in a nursing career, contact the Eastern campus at 918-465-1794 or the Southeastern campus in Idabel at 580-286-9461.
