Wilburton junior GEAR UP students tour Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology
WILBURTON, OK (Oct. 28, 2015) – Wilburton junior GEAR UP students recently toured Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in Okmulgee. OSU–IT tour guide Sable Vasquez began the tour at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Students completed Tour Tracker information sheets, and Sable provided an overview of what students should expect during the tour.
Students spoke in–depth with faculty from three academic programs: School of Automotive Technologies, School of Construction, and the School of Visual Communications. The School of Automotive Technologies includes collision repair and service for Chrysler, Ford, GM, Toyota, and Pro–Tech. Students in this program can participate in an eight–week internship.
The School of Construction Technology includes: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Construction Management, Electrical, and High Voltage Electricity. Students were shown videos about the programs and internships and average salaries for each field were discussed.
The School of Visual Communications includes: Graphic Design Technology, 3D Modeling & Animation, and Photography.
After touring the departments, students were led to the motel–style dormitory in England Hall. OSU–IT provides other options for student housing which include traditional student dorms and family and non–traditional student dorms such as suites and apartments.
The tour ended at the Student Union. The student health clinic, post office, and cafeteria are located in the student union.
“College tours are an important part of Eastern’s GEAR UP program,” said GEAR UP Education Coordinator Melissa Juarez. “They give the students a first–hand look at life on a college campus.”
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural or educational in nature.
