Wilburton GEAR UP students tour Southeastern Oklahoma State University
WILBURTON, OK (April 24, 2014) – Wilburton ninth grade GEAR UP students recently toured Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. Students visited the Bloomer Sullivan Basketball Arena; the radio station (KSSU) and the newspaper room in the Fine Arts building; a room in Shearer Residence Hall; and concluded their tour at the Student Union.
The outing provided the students with a firsthand look at life on a college campus. College students were available in each department to explain a description of their jobs. Several college students were on-hand in the radio station to explain their different roles. Wilburton students were able to request songs at the radio station and take a copy of the school newspaper.
Students took a walking tour past the baseball and football fields on their way to the Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
The apartment–style Shearer Residence Hall dormitories impressed many of the Wilburton students. One of the residents talked to the group about life at Southeastern. At the end of the tour, the student guides spoke about various aspects of Southeastern and answered questions. The tour ended with lunch in the student union.
College tours are an important part of Eastern’s GEAR UP grant program.
“It’s vital to give students a first-hand look at colleges and universities,” said GEAR UP Education Coordinator Melissa Juarez. “So many students do not realize what opportunities are available to them. GEAR UP is working to help students realize their potential and reach their dreams.”
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural or educational in nature.
