Stocker cattle sale results in $26,000 donation to Eastern Foundation from the Reed Family Trust

WILBURTON, OK (May 4, 2018) – The Eastern Oklahoma State College Development Foundation recently received a donation of more than $26,000 from the Reed Family Trust of Poteau as a result of the sale of stocker cattle in the college’s ranch management degree program.

The Reed Family Trust purchased 229 cattle in October for use on Eastern’s farm. Students in the ranch management degree program were responsible for the day-to-day management of the herd, including feeding and maintaining the health of the cattle. In April, the cattle were sold to a commercial feedlot for a profit of $26,379.44 and the funds were donated to the EOSC Development Foundation to support the Agriculture Division.

Eastern President Dr. Stephen E. Smith said this was the second donation from the Reed Family Trust to support the Agriculture program in the past year. After the initial investments were recovered, the proceeds of the two sales totaled $72,256.63.

“Eastern’s ranch management degree in stocker operations is the only program of its kind in Oklahoma. These generous donations will help us improve the infrastructure and equipment used by students and faculty that is necessary in a hands-on learning environment,” Smith said. “We greatly appreciate Bob Reed and his family for their generosity and commitment to our students’ success.”

Bob Reed is the chairman of The Community State Bank, which was created in 1970 and has locations in Wilburton, Poteau, Spiro, Wister and Talihina.

Eastern launched the ranch management degree with a focus on stocker operations in the fall of 2016. Smith said the goal is to prepare students for an affordable entry into the ranching and cattle business. Students in the program work closely with instructors and professional ranchers to learn how to operate a small business; maintain the financial, operational, production and employment records; and train and supervise personnel.
