Mountaineers finish season one win shy of NJCAA World Series


WILBURTON, OK (May 22, 2012) – The Eastern Oklahoma State College Mountaineers ended the season one win shy of a trip to the NJCAA World Series.

After winning their third consecutive Region II Championship, the Mountaineers traveled to Hillsboro, Mo. to compete in the South Central District Tournament May 18-20 at Jefferson College. The three-team, double-elimination tournament included Eastern, host and fourth-ranked Jefferson College (51-10) and Delgado Community College from New Orleans, La (30-22). The winner advanced to NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Co.

Eastern defeated Delgado 8-6 and Jefferson 5-3 in games on the first day of the tournament on Friday. Jefferson rallied to defeat the Mountaineers 12-5 on Saturday. Eastern and Jefferson met for the third time in the tournament for the final game on Sunday. Tied 2-2 after nine complete innings, the game was delayed because of rain and lightning. The game resumed on Monday and Jefferson prevailed with a 3-2 win in the 10th inning.

Eastern finished the season ranked No. 19 nationally and 38-22 overall. First-year head coach Craig Price was named the Region II Coach of the Year.
