9/30/2016

WILBURTON, OK (Sept. 30, 2016) – LeFlore GEAR UP students recently toured Connors State College in Warner. Director of Recruitment Logan Knapper led the tour which began in the Fine Arts Building auditorium. Kanpper explained some of the programs that Connors offers and how choosing the right college is important. She provided students with handouts of things students can do to prepare for college. She discussed the importance of the ACT and challenged them to begin thinking about the future. She also provided the students with information about amenities Connors has to offer. Students were eager to ask questions about the programs and activities Connors has available.

Students were led through an apartment–style dormitory at Millers Crossing and its clubhouse. Knapper discussed the various science and math classes held in the Education Building. Next stop on the tour was the Classroom Building where she discussed various classes—business, history, math, and humanities—held there. Students visited the Business Office, Student Union, and Holloway Hall. She explained students would become very familiar with services provided and offered in those locations.

“The dorms were very nice and good size to have at college. Everyone was very helpful,” said LeFlore senior Summer Adams.

Next stop was the Melvin Self Fieldhouse and weight room. Knapper discussed the competitive sports the college offers including men’s & women’s basketball, cheerleading, baseball, softball, rodeo, and shooting sports.

Students saw the Farm Building as she discussed the different agriculture programs available.

“I liked the agriculture program,” said Jakob Newman and Nicole Dobbs. “Everyone was very helpful.”

The Carl Westbrook Library Learning Center was the final stop on the tour. Students heard how important a college library is and were able to ask questions. Knapper discussed various upcoming student activities.

“College tours are an important part of Eastern’s GEAR UP program,” said GEAR UP Education Coordinator Tara Stevens. “They give the students a first–hand look at life on a college campus.”

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural/educational in nature.
