GEAR UP Education Coordinator provides professional development to Indianola and Puterbaugh teachers

Eastern’s GEAR UP Education Coordinator Brianna Brassfield presents “Ruby Payne—10 Actions to Educate Students” to Indianola teachers during a recent professional development workshop. Included in the actions are: Build a relationship of mutual trust; Teach students the hidden rules of school; Analyze the resources of your students and make interventions based on resources the students have access to; Teach formal register, the language of school and work; Teach abstract processes; Teach mental models; Teach students how to plan; Use the adult voice and refraining to change behaviors; Understand the family resources and dynamics in order to impact interventions; and Teach how to ask questions. The workshop was provided free to the partner school faculty and administration. In 2017, Eastern received a $17 million GEAR UP grant and is serving over 3,000 students and teachers in 39 area partner schools.

Brassfield presented Units 6–9 which included Setting Limits with Enforceable Statements; Using Choices to Prevent Power Struggles; Quick and Easy Preventative Interventions; and Guiding Students to Own and Solve Their Problems. The workshop was provided free to the partner school faculty and administration. GEAR UP Education Coordinator Brianna Brassfield provided Harry Wong’s “The Effective Teacher” professional development to Indianola teachers recently. The workshop included The Effective Teacher, The First Days of School, and Discipline and Procedures. The presentation included what effective teachers do to cause student achievement. The workshop was provided free to the partner school faculty and administration. In 2017, Eastern received a $17 million GEAR UP grant and is serving over 3,000 students and teachers in 39 area partner schools.
