Eastern to open newly constructed greenhouse to the public
WILBURTON, OK (Sept. 9, 2013) – Eastern Oklahoma State College will reveal its newly constructed greenhouse to the public during an Open House scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20 from noon to 4 p.m.
The 2,880-square-foot greenhouse features automatic irrigation, fertilization and shade systems, as well as a storefront that will allow the public to purchase plants in the fall and spring. Construction was completed this summer by American Plant Products in Oklahoma City.
Horticulture instructor Penny Jones said Eastern students and faculty have spent the summer and first few weeks of the fall semester setting up the facility and growing bedding plants, vegetable plants and houseplants that will be available for sale.
“We’re all very excited about this state-of-the-art facility and the learning opportunities it will provide for our students,” Jones said. “The greenhouse will serve as a living laboratory for students in horticulture, agriculture education, agronomy and forestry classes. Students will also experience the business side of operating a greenhouse with our plant sales to the public.”
Following the Open House, the greenhouse will be open for sales on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern’s greenhouse is located on the south side of Highway 270, across from the softball field and next to the Goddard Livestock Show Arena.
