Eastern students to host Meet the Candidates forum on Oct. 2
WILBURTON, OK (Sept. 24, 2018) – Members of the Eastern Oklahoma State College Honors program and Phi Theta Kappa honor society (PTK) will co-sponsor a “Meet the Candidates” forum on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Tourtellotte Student Center Ballroom in Wilburton.
The forum, which is free and open to the public, will provide an opportunity to learn about the candidates running for state and local offices in the upcoming mid-term elections.
Dr. Andrea Green, Eastern Honors program sponsor, said candidates will be encouraged to answer important questions such as “Why should I vote?” and “How does my vote affect my daily life?”
Candidates, or representatives from their campaigns, for Governor, Congressional District 2 and District 17 of the Oklahoma Legislature, and County Commissioner District 3 will have the opportunity to persuade voters that they are the best candidates for the positon in this bipartisan event. The event will include opening statements by the candidates, prepared questions from a moderator and questions from the audience.
Of particular interest for local voters, District 17 candidates Jim Grego and Peggy DeFrange will be on site to share their visions for a brighter future for southeastern Oklahoma. The general election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The forum is the culmination of Eastern’s annual PTK voter registration drive. Sponsor Brenda Kennedy said Eastern has won the Oklahoma Campus Compact voter registration competition between all colleges and universities in Oklahoma for the past eight years.
“Though it is important to register new voters, it is even more important to make sure these first-time voters get out and vote and that they are informed voters,” Kennedy said.
Eastern Phi Theta Kappa members Jude Ebingha and Rachil Needham work on posters for the group’s annual voter registration drive.
