Eastern students presented Larry Stone Award at 48th Annual Athletic Awards Reception
WILBURTON, OK (May 16, 2016) – Eastern Oklahoma State College sophomores Zach Fowler and Mykaela Jones were recently recognized as this year’s recipients of the Larry Stone Award.
Stone was a popular football and basketball player at Eastern in the 1960s and was known for his commitment to his team and selflessness. He was killed while serving his country on a patrol in Vietnam.
Since 1967, Eastern alumni and friends have gathered at the college to present the award to a male and female student athlete who exemplify the same characteristics as Stone. Both recipients embody the spirit of teamwork, citizenship, selflessness, determination and excel in their scholarly efforts as well as athletics.
Fowler of Asher graduated on May 6 with a general studies degree. He was awarded the Southwestern Bell Telephone Endowed Scholarship as a freshman in 2013, and received the Dell and Ramona Allen Foundation Scholarship in 2014. He earned a place on the Dean’s Honor Roll fall 2015. A baseball player for the Mountaineers, Fowler was recently named MVP of the Region II Tournament after he and his teammates won the Championship, the team’s fourth championship in seven years. He pitched 43 innings, throwing 48 strikeouts and only 17 bases on balls. While still in high school, he was named Oklahoma Pro-Line Player of the Year and was a volunteer for the HUGS Project.
Jones of Owasso also graduated on May 6 with a degree in life science. She also earned the Southwestern Bell Telephone Endowed Scholarship in 2014 and 2015. She was named to the President’s Honor Roll for fall 2015, and was invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in 2015. Jones played in Eastern’s first-ever soccer game in the fall 2015. During her time on the team, she played in 38 games and was a starter in 37. As a sophomore, she served as team captain. Aside from her academic and athletic achievements, she was also involved other extracurricular activities such as Eastern’s Trunk-or-Treat, Regional Science & Engineering Fair and was an active member in the Math and Science Club. She graduated this spring with a 3.95 GPA, and plans to continue her education and become a pharmacist.
Mykaela Jones and Zach Fowler recently received the Larry Stone Award for their overall contributions, teamwork and citizenship as athletes at Eastern Oklahoma State College. The award is named after the late Larry Stone who played football and baseball at Eastern in the early 1960s.
