Eastern students inducted into national honor society
WILBURTON, OK (Dec. 4, 2013) – A group of 37 high-achieving Eastern Oklahoma State College students were recently inducted into the national honor society Phi Theta Kappa during a campus ceremony in Wilburton.
Founded in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is recognized as the official honor society for community colleges. The organization seeks to foster scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship among its members. Membership is based on academic achievement and is granted by invitation only. To qualify for membership, students must have completed 12 to 29 hours of associate degree course work with a cumulative 3.75 grade point average or more than 30 credit hours with a cumulative 3.5 grade point average.
Each year, Eastern’s PTK members sponsor a variety of events to serve their campus and community. The organization’s ninth annual Toys for Tots Christmas Campaign is currently underway. The drive will provide wrapped toy donations to student families.
In addition, Eastern’s PTK members recently received first-place honors from Oklahoma Campus Compact for winning a statewide voter registration competition for the fourth consecutive year. Student PTK members registered an additional 11.1 percent of Eastern’s student population to win. During the five-day competition, 19 participating colleges and universities registered a total of 1,530 new voters.
