Eastern students honored with 50th annual Larry Stone Awards

5/11/2018

WILBURTON, OK (May 11, 2018) – For the past 50 years, Eastern Oklahoma State College has honored the legacy of a former two-sport athlete and Marine lieutenant who died in combat while on patrol in Vietnam. The late Larry Stone of Jay was recently remembered at Eastern’s 2018 Larry Stone Athletics Awards Banquet and three student-athletes received awards in his name.

Stone played football and baseball at Eastern in the early 1960s and was known for his unselfish attitude and commitment to his team. It is this lasting impression that prompted a group of his former college teammates and classmates to honor his legacy by presenting the annual Larry Stone Award to a male and female student athlete who exemplifies the same characteristics. A memorial scholarship is also awarded to a student-athlete who will return to Eastern for his or her sophomore year.

Eastern sophomores Winslow Lybrand and Chance Long were selected for the 2018 Larry Stone Award on the basis of their overall contributions to the spirit of athletics and their demonstration of teamwork, determination, unselfishness and citizenship. Tayze Ellington received the Larry Stone Memorial Scholarship. Stone’s sister, Sherri Stone Frederick, presented the awards.

Lybrand is a softball player from Bethany, Oklahoma. She graduated in the top 10 percent of her class this spring with a degree in criminal justice and an overall 3.92 grade point average. Long is a baseball player from Red Oak, Oklahoma. He graduated with an overall 4.0 grade point average and in the top ten percent of his class, earning a degree in general studies. Both are members of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Ellington is a soccer player from Kingston, Jamaica. He is studying business administration and earned a 3.7 grade point average this year. The Stone Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Eastern’s outstanding freshman student-athlete and is selected on academics, leadership and sportsmanship.
