Eastern Oklahoma State College’s Dean of Language and Humanities to address graduates at college Commencement on May 8

WILBURTON (April 20, 2015) – Dr. Billye Givens, Eastern Oklahoma State College alumna and Dean of the Language and Humanities Division, will be the keynote speaker for the college’s Commencement Ceremony on May 8 at 7 p.m. in the C.C. Dunlap Field House in Wilburton.
Approximately 280 Eastern graduates are eligible to participate in this year’s ceremony. The event will begin with a Commencement Celebration picnic at 5 p.m. in the amphitheatre outside the Student Center. The meal is free to students and their family and friends.
Givens has taught at Eastern for 42 years. In addition to serving as dean, Givens has also been the chair of the English department since 2006. She was selected by her peers to receive the President’s Teaching Excellence Award. She has also received the Honors Teacher of the Year Award and was chosen by the students as Teacher of the Year twice.
Givens is a graduate of Wilburton High School and Eastern Oklahoma State College. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree and doctorate of education at Oklahoma State University. Givens is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and has also played and coached varsity tennis.
Givens has a passion for community involvement and philanthropic efforts. She is the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilburton and the President of Partners for Animal Welfare of Wilburton.
