Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP sponsors free Chad Cargill ACT Test Prep Workshop for GEAR UP seniors

9/21/2017

WILBURTON, OK (Sept. 21, 2017) – Over two hundred fifty area high school seniors from 21 schools learned how to better prepare for the ACT as they attended a three-hour ACT and Character Building Workshop presented by Chad Cargill, founder and president of Cargill Consulting. The workshop was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP for Success grant program.

Throughout high school Chad knew he needed to win scholarships in order to attend Oklahoma State University. During his freshman year in high school, Chad discovered that many scholarships were based on ACT scores and the journey was on. Cargill developed the workshop after taking the ACT 18 times and increasing his score from a 19 to a 32. This phenomenal increase was simply due to him learning what was on the test and how to take it. Now Chad travels full time across the country giving his workshop.

“Chad encouraged the students to take the ACT test as many times as they can,” said GEAR UP Project Director Linda Morgan. “He explained ‘the ACT test is beatable’ and then provided tips on how to improve their scores by following the guidelines he presented.”

Cargill guided students through a step-by-step process of completing each section of the ACT—English, Math, Reading and Science Reasoning—with tips on how to gain points by carefully examining the questions and following his suggestions to providing correct answers. Students attending were from Antlers, Atoka, Bokoshe, Buffalo Valley, Canadian, Clayton, Crowder, Hartshorne, Indianola, Keota, LeFlore, McCurtain, Moyers, Panama, Quinton, Rattan, Spiro, Stringtown, Talihina, Whitesboro, and Wilburton.

Eastern is in its seventh year of the $12.6 million federal GEAR UP grant. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal initiative to increase the number of low-income students who enter and successfully transition into postsecondary education.
