Eastern Oklahoma State College awards more than $465,000 in scholarships to 188 students for the 2017-18 academic year

9/21/2017

WILBURTON, OK (Sept. 21, 2017) – Eastern Oklahoma State College has awarded more than $465,000 in scholarships to 188 students attending classes in Wilburton, McAlester, Idabel and Antlers for the 2017-18 academic year. The students were recently honored during a reception in Wilburton.

Institutional scholarships and tuition waivers provided by Eastern totaled $159,000. The Eastern Development Foundation awarded an additional $310,000 in scholarships.

Jayna Santine, program administrator for the Eastern Development Foundation, expressed that although Eastern remains an affordable option for attaining a higher education in Oklahoma, financial assistance is still crucial to students’ overall success.

“While our students are attending classes, these scholarships and waivers can truly be the difference between graduating in the traditional four semesters and not. Even after graduating, the importance of these scholarships cannot be understated. Eastern’s low costs and the financial assistance provided by these funds greatly ease the financial burden attaining a higher education can entail,” Santine said. “Thank you again to the individuals, businesses and organizations who have made this a possibility.”

Santine explained that the Development Foundation is primarily funded by endowments. Endowments permanently supply funding, as the principle remains wholly intact and scholarships come from the accrued interest. Scholarships are typically awarded based on academic excellence, major or financial need.
