Eastern Mountaineers ranked No. 12 nationally in preseason basketball poll
WILBURTON, OK (Oct. 25, 2011) – The Eastern Oklahoma State College men’s basketball team has earned a No. 12 ranking in the 2011-12 NJCAA Preseason Top 20 National Poll.
“This is just a blessing for us,” said second-year coach Scott Edgar. “It’s a credit to the talent of our players, the commitment of Eastern’s leadership, the quality of our faculty and staff, as well as the support of our community.”
Nine players return to the team this year, with an additional 10 freshmen. The Mountaineers finished 19-11 last season and made it to the semifinals of the Region 2 Tournament.
Edgar said he is humbled with the No. 12 ranking and is happy with the progress the basketball program has made recently. The Mountaineers finished the 2009-10 season with no wins.
“There’s a lot of time between now and the national tournament in March,” Edgar said. “But, it’s a tremendous accomplishment from where we were a year and a half ago when we were trying to find players and build a team.”
Eastern is the only Oklahoma college in the preseason poll. Defending national champion College of Southern Idaho is ranked No. 1. Rounding out the top 10 are Monroe College, Midland College, Palm Beach State College, Coffeyville Community College, Trinity Valley Community College, East Mississippi Community College, Howard College, Indian Hills Community College-Ottumwa, Three
Rivers Community College.
Eastern’s opening basketball games of the season are Tuesday, Nov. 1 against Rhema Bible College.
The women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
