Eastern clinches conference championship with 67-64 win over Western


WILBURTON, OK (Feb. 24, 2012) – The 6th ranked Eastern Oklahoma State College Mountaineers defeated the Western Oklahoma State College Pioneers 67-64 Thursday night in Wilburton to clinch a regular season conference championship.

Eastern sophomore Tharone Chilton led the Mountaineers with 17 points and Marcus Tarrance added 16 points in the victory. The Mountaineers are now 26-2 with only two regular season games remaining before the regional tournament March 9-11 in Shawnee.

Second-year head coach Scott Edgar said he is proud of his team, which boasts one of the best records in Eastern’s history.

“I am humbled and honored to be part of this regular season championship,” Edgar said. “I am proud of the entire team, especially my sophomores who came and changed the recent culture of Eastern Oklahoma State College basketball. But, our entire college and community accomplished this together.”

As recently as two years ago, Eastern finished the 2009-10 basketball season with no wins.

Next up, the Mountaineers and Lady Mountaineers travel to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami for games Monday night. They return home Thursday, March 1 to take on Connors State College for the final regular season games. The women tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
