Area students compete in regional math competition
WILBURTON, OK (Feb. 14, 2013) – Thirty-four middle school students representing five area schools competed Feb. 9 at the 2013 Southeast Region MATHCOUNTS competition at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.
The MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of “bee” style contests. After working throughout the school year, students enrolled in sixth, seventh and eighth grade compete at four levels including school, region, state and nationals. The top two teams and an All Star squad and a coach advance to the state competition on March 2 in Norman.
The team from Stilwell earned first place honors and was named Most Improved School. The team will advance to the state competition on March 2 in Norman. Team members include (standing, left to right) Coach Beth Essary, Kolt Carver, Matt Catron, Luke Inman, Dakota St. Pierre, Eric Catron, (seated, left to right) Joshua Hammons, Kelsey Kout, Chelsey Rock, Erika Vanderheiden and Assistant Coach Essary. Vanderheiden was named the top sixth grade student in the competition.
The Wilburton team earned second place honors and was named Top New School. The team will advance to the state competition on March 2 in Norman. The team from Canadian earned third place honors. Members include (standing, left to right) Coach Shana Grubis, Austin Alexander, Hayden Hopper, John Walker, Serena Woodward, Re’gan Boggs, (seated, left to right) Paul Brewster, Corey Hoskins, Dalton Lenox, Daniel Lenox and Jacob Smith. Walker was named the top seventh grade student in the competition.
Haileyville team members include (left to right) Coach Pamela Sweetin, Anna Benedict, Will Copeland, Brandi Moore, Hunter Soliday and Keifer Hollaway. Soliday was named the first place winner in the overall individual competition and the top eighth grade student in the competition.
The Kiowa team members include (left to right) Coach Catherine Tadlock, Grayson Griffin, Shelby Linscott, Cole Shores and Taylor Williams.
