Area students compete in regional 2017 MATHCOUNTS competition at Eastern

WILBURTON, OK (Feb. 24, 2017) – Middle school students representing four area schools recently competed in the 2017 Eastern Region MATHCOUNTS competition at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.

The MATHCOUNTS competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievements through a series of “bee” style contests. After working throughout the school year, students enrolled in sixth, seventh and eighth grade compete at four levels including school, region, state and nationals. The top two teams, All-Star Squad and their coach will advance to the state competition on March 4 in Norman.


Students who represented First Lutheran School, Ponca City, include (left to right) Coach Susan Pacey, Madux Johnson, David Miller, Ryan Turnipseed and Savannah Valgora.


Students representing St. John Catholic School, Bartlesville, include (standing left to right) Coach Lexie Radebaugh, Luis Ortiz, Sam Schuette, Cole Spencer, Jonathon Thiedeault, Fiona Eunice, Sabastian Eunice, (sitting left to right) Matt Fries, Lucan Gallery and Rebecca Williams.


Students who represented Kiowa Public Schools include (left to right) Coach Catherine Tadlock, Tray Goddard, Kori Ince, Aubrey Johnson, Sydney Linscott, Ian Cole and Hannah Rhyne.


Students who represented Haileyville Public Schools include (back row left to right) Coach Pam Sweetin, Wyatt Beers, Kyle Garvin, Carrie Jobe, Mariah Shamasco, (front row left to right) Jenessa Dugger and Shelby Ranells.

The team from St. John Catholic School earned second place honors and was named Most Improved School. The team will advance to the state competition on March 4 in Norman.
